More than a billion people follow the religion of Hinduism. It is one of the major world religions. Every August, Hindus through

out the world celebrate Raksha Bandhan. This holiday honors the relationship between sisters and brothers. During Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a protective thread, called rakhi, around the right wrist of their brothers. Brothers give gifts and promise protection to their sisters. The word "rakshabandhan" means "tie of protection." As sisters tied the rakhi, they repeat words and phrases in the Sanskrit language that are meant to protect their brother from harm. Sanskrit is an ancient language in which many religious texts were written.
