Proponents of the daoist religion bought further political pressure on buddhism. Often, daoist organizations defined their selves with respect to devotees of popular sects and buddhists, their practices did not match. By redefining the doctrines and practices of other religions in their own terms, such as daoist groups would attempt to supplant them. In case of buddhism, the goal was to replace the foreign religion with a more authentic chinese version.
