The policy of the British was to control production and discourage industrialization in the American colonies. Those American colonies were needed to provide raw materials and then, to consume the products fabricated in England. The British monarchy tried everything it could to prevent competition from the colonies. The monarchy prohibited the exportation of new machinery to the colonies because England should be the only place to manufacture things and create a dependency of the colonies to buy their products.
