La ley de la conservación de la energía (la cual es la primera ley de la termodinámica) indica que la energía no se puede crear ni se puede destruir, solamente se transforma, de un tipo a otro. La ley de la conservación de la energía es de vital importancia para entender la existencia del mundo natural. En ecología, la energía fluye de un nivel trófico a otro en forma de biomasa, es decir, dentro de la cadena alimentaria. Esta energía no se puede crear ni destruir sino que es almacenada en los organismos, los cuales representan sistemas abiertos que intercambian materia y energía con el medio. Una vez dentro del organismo, una parte de esta energía es transformada (en plantas, por ejemplo, la energía es convertida en enlaces químicos durante la síntesis de carbohidratos), mientras que otra parte de la energía se elimina al exterior (por ejemplo, se disipa en forma de calor), pero la energía no se crea ni se destruye.

The scientific method is a process of steps in order to get a conclusion. First, a scientist will observe something. It could be really anything. Then he/she will ask themselves a question. Like how does it do that? Or why does it do that?

Then they will form a hypothesis. This is where you will ask yourself what will be the outcome of the experiment.

Next you actually perform the experiment. If the experiment comes out as your hypothesis predicted, then you accept your hypothesis.

If not, you reject your hypothesis.

Of course, in science you just don't do one experiment. You do it multiple times and even with different circumstances.

Ecological communities are highly dynamic- they gradually evolve. Typically their progression involves:

  • colonizing species exploiting uninhabited areas (Primary succession)
  • becoming a habitable and increasingly complex community
  • there is increased diversity of organisms (Secondary)

The makeup of biological communities is crucial to defining Primary and Secondary succession; eventually, through changes in this makeup, a steady-state or equilibrium is reached called a climax community. While Primary succession starts off with the modification of a previously unoccupied area along with increasing variation; secondary succession begins after major disruption in the community such as fires, storms and flooding.

Like the harvested climax forest, secondary communities do not begin with the removal of soil and all biological life; other species, may be more suited to the altered conditions and begin to modify the area creating a new community.

However, the process of becoming a climax community can be pretty complicated- it is very dependent on other factors like temperature and rainfall. Communities that experience rapid change, frequent major disruptions and even human intervention, are less likely to attain a stable equilibrium and may never become climax communities.
