Answer: The American (not the french side)

Explanation: Im not quite sure what war your speaking of, but since the soilder said ¨keeping the French off¨, he/she clearly opposes the French. Therefore, the soilder is on the opposite side (the side that opposes the French), of which I would assume is American (correct me if Im wrong)
