The policy the US government adopted after Pearl Harbour occurred was to move anyone of Japanese descent into internment camps, where they were expected to remain for the duration of WWII. The Japanese Americans were sent to live in what were called relocation centers, which were located in remote parts of western states and Arkansas. Their treatment there was a lot like being in prison: their movements were restricted by armed guards and they had to be present at roll call. They were kept inside the grounds with barbed wire fencing. It was a decision based largely on unspoken prejudices against Asian immigrants because there was no incarceration of people with German or Italian ancestry.
