During the Middle Ages, the feudal system removed the previous system from the ancient period, which was based on slavery. Slavery did not exist in the Middle Ages, and the economic system created new social classes. In place of slaves came serfs and peasants. These were free people, but their existence depended on the feds or landholdings. A peasant and if a free man, he had to work on the estate to survive.
