Isolate the x.

x - y (+y) = 1 (+y)

x = 1 + y

Plug in 1 + y for x in the other equation

x+y=5

(1 + y) + y = 5

1 + 2y = 5

Isolate the y. Do the opposite of PEMDAS. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other.

1 (-1) + 2y = 5 (-1)

2y = 4

2y/2 = 4/2

y = 2

x-y=1

Plug in 2 for y in one of the equations

x - (2) = 1

Solve for x

x - 2 (+2) = 1 (+2)

x = 1 + 2

x = 3

x = 3, y = 2
