Answer:

The solution 0.010 M has a higher percent ionization of the acid.

Explanation:

The percent ionization can be found using the following equation:

\% I = \frac{[H_{3}O^{+}]}{[CH_{3}COOH]} \times 100

Since we know the acid concentration in the two cases, we need to find [H₃O⁺].

By using the dissociation of acetic acid in the water we can calculate the concentration of H₃O⁺ in the two cases:

1. Case 1 (0.1 M):

CH₃COOH(aq) + H₂O(l) ⇄ CH₃COO⁻(aq) + H₃O⁺(aq)   (1)

0.1 - x                                         x                     x

Ka = \frac{[CH_{3}COO^{-}][H_{3}O^{+}]}{[CH_{3}COOH]}  (2)

Where:

Ka: is the dissociation constant of acetic acid = 1.7x10⁻⁵.

1.7 \cdot 10^{-5} = \frac{x^{2}}{0.1 - x}

1.7 \cdot 10^{-5}*(0.1 - x) - x^{2} = 0

By solving the above equation for x we have:

x = 1.29x10⁻³ M = [CH₃COO⁻] = [H₃O⁺]

Hence, the percent ionization is:

\% I = \frac{1.29 \cdot 10^{-3} M}{0.1 M} \times 100 = 1.29 \%

2. Case 2 (0.01 M):

The dissociation constant from reaction (1) is:

Ka = \frac{[CH_{3}COO^{-}][H_{3}O^{+}]}{[CH_{3}COOH]}

With [CH₃COOH] = 0.01 M

1.7 \cdot 10^{-5} = \frac{x^{2}}{0.01 - x}

1.7 \cdot 10^{-5}*(0.01 - x) - x^{2} = 0

By solving the above equation for x:

x = 4.04x10⁻⁴ M = [CH₃COO⁻] = [H₃O⁺]

Then, the percent ionization for this case is:

\% I = \frac{4.04 \cdot 10^{-4} M}{0.01 M} \times 100 = 4.04 \%

As we can see, the solution 0.010 M has a higher percent ionization of the acetic acid.

Therefore, the solution 0.010 M has a higher percent ionization of the acid.

I hope it helps you!

At 800 K, the equilibrium constant, Kp, for the following reaction is 3.2 × 10–7. 2 H2S(g) ⇌ 2 H2(g) + S2(g) A reaction vessel a
djverab [1.8K]

Answer:

0.008945 atm

Explanation:

In the reaction:

2H2S(g) ⇌ 2 H2(g) + S2(g)

Kp is defined as:

Kp = P_{H_{2}}^2P_{S_{2}} / P_{H_{2}S}^2

<em>Where P is the pressure of each compound in equilibrium.</em>

If initial pressure of H2S is 3.00atm, concentrations in equilibrium are:

H2S = 3.00 atm - 2X

H2 = 2X

S2: = X

Replacing:

3.2x10^{-7} = (2X)^2X / (3-2X)^2

3.2x10^{-7} = 4X^3 / 9- 6X+4X^2

0 = 4X³ - 1.28x10⁻⁶X² + 1.92x10⁻⁶X - 2.88x10⁻⁶

Solving for X:

X = 0.008945 atm

As in equilibrium, pressure of S2 is X, <em>pressure is 0.008945 atm</em>

At what temperature will .100 moles of CO2 occupy 2.00L at 1.31 atm?
Sholpan [36]

Answer: T = 319.5 K

Explanation: We will use the formula of Ideal Gas Law and derive for temperature. Ideal Gas Law is expressed in PV = nRT. The derived formula for T will be:

T = PV / nR

  = 1.31 atm (2.00 L) / 0.100 mole ( 0.082 L.atm/ mole.K )

  = 319.5 K

Cancel the units of atm, L and moles.
