They consumed apples in cider untilthe prohibition. But that change in the early of 1990s when the apple notions of health and wholesomeness turn out to be a modern invention. (Combined answer of the first 3 questions). Early Americans used apples to make hard cider. By the time settlers arrived, they would have trees to sell them because it was a law in Ohio to have apple/pear trees on your land. ( Last question ).
