Mostly the urban poor went to pubs. -Laws were passed that limited work day hours, so people had more hours of free time in the evening. -Better transportation techniques, such as trains, allowed people to travel in order to enjoy sports games and socialize with others.

If you are referring to Shirer, then he believed that the reaction of Europe was that Europe was so afraid of going into another war that they were prepared to do anything, such as Give Czechoslovakia to Germans without a war. He wasted a lot of time fixing the problems about Nixon so he saw that if he pardoned him he would be able to continue to solve the real problems that affected the whole country. This was a very unpopular move on the average voter and he lost the election.
