<em>When skin cells are damaged by ultraviolet radiation from the sun, the cells present in the tissue of the skin are triggered to start dividing by mitosis in order to produce new cells that replace the damaged cells. Thus, new cells are produced from the old cell.</em>

This phenomenon agrees with the part of the cell theory that says that cells can only arise from preexisting cells. More specifically, <u>cells are only able to arise from preexisting cells through the process of cell division.</u>
