Most often, when young adults/teenagers involve themselves in sexual activity at a young age, they are reprimanded and have severe consequences. Sometimes the consequences coming from parents/legal guardians/relatives/caretakers. The consequences can also be from the sexual activity, including; AIDS, HIV, and teen pregnancies.

I would suppose because this was during the earlier years of the 20 century when men were still the basic provider for their families, while wives stayed at home and took care of the children.
