Vesicles carrying the neurotransmitter fuse with the presynaptic membrane and release the molecule by exocytosis to the intercellular space. This chemical substance travels through the synaptic cleft to the junctional area of the other neuron and binds to its receptors in the postsynaptic membrane. This binding produces depolarization of the cell. An action potential is initiated and spreads to the rest of the membrane depolarizing it.
