Algae include multiple organisms that are mainly classified as eukaryotic and rely on photosynthesis like plants, although they are quite different from plants. In terms of reproduction, algae can reproduce in many ways depending on the sécies, this includes asexual reproduction that occurs through fission in which cells divide into two or more cells to reproduce; fragmentation in which the algae breaks into different fragments and each of these is able to form a new complete individual and also, algae can reproduce through sexual reproduction which means there are female and male gametes involved. According to this, it can be concluded algae can reproduce by all of the above (fission, sexual reproduction, and fragmentation).
Most algae that are small reproduce asexually using fragmentation or by cell division. Larger algae on the other hand reproduce by use of spores.
Fragmentation is a mode of asexual reproduction in which the parent divides into two or more fragments which later develops into a new organism.
A good example of an algae that uses fragmentation is green algae also called Spirogyra. The parent divides into distinct pieces which can then produce an offspring.
They are made of protein and one molecule of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). As the genetic material passes from parents to child, the chromosomes are responsible for containing the instructions that make the offspring unique while still carrying traits from the parent.
