The National Origins Act of 1924 placed caps on immigration from certain areas of the world in a bid to maintain the dominance of western European groups in the United States such as the Germans and the English.

This was repealed in 1965 by the Immigration and Nationality Act as people began to see the previous Act as discriminatory. With caps on most of the world lifted, immigrants from many areas flooded into the United States and immigrants from Latin America formed the largest portion with them comprising of 47% of the immigrants who came in during the years 1971–1991.
