The answer is b.
15/20. multiply 3/4 by 5 on both the top and bottom,, the result is 15/20. Once you have 15/20 you take the other fraction (2/5) and multiply both the top and bottom by 4. You should end up with 8/20 now that both fractions have the same denominator you can subtract them. Once you do so the denominator will stay the same except the numerator you end up with 7/20 with this fraction you can add 8/20 when they are added together you should get 15/20.

We need to use what we know about rectangles to get:

1)

  • Total length = 2*W + 8ft
  • Total width = W + 8ft

2) area = 2*W^2 + 24ft*W + 64ft^2

<h3>Working with rectangles:</h3>

We know that rectangles are defined by two measures, width W and length L.

Here we do know that the length of the pool is twice the width, and the width is W, then the length of the pool is:

L = 2*W

And we also have a sidewalk of 4ft all around the pool, now we want to get:

1) The total length and the total width.

This will be equal to the length/width of the pool <u>plus twice the width of the sidewalk</u> (we add it twice because is in both ends) then we have:

  • Total length = L + 2*4ft = 2*W + 8ft
  • Total width = W + 2*4ft = W + 8ft

2) Now we want to get an expression for the total area of the pool.

Remember that for a rectangle the area is just the product between the width and the length, so to get the area of the pool with the sidewalk we just take:

area = (total length)*(total width)

area = (2*W + 8ft)*(W + 8ft) = 2*W^2 + 3*W*8ft + 64ft^2

area = 2*W^2 + 24ft*W + 64ft^2

This is the equation that gives the total area as a function of W, the width of the pool.

Answers:

x = -8/5 or x = 8/5

Sum of the first ten terms where all terms are positive = 4092

========================================================

Explanation:

r = common ratio

  • first term = 4
  • second term = (first term)*(common ratio) = 4r
  • third term = (second term)*(common ratio) = (4r)*r = 4r^2

The first three terms are: 4, 4r, 4r^2

We're given that the sequence is: 4, 5x, 16

Therefore, we have these two equations

  • 5x = 4r
  • 4r^2 = 16

Solve the second equation for r and you should find that r = -2 or r = 2 are the only possible solutions. If r = -2, then 5x = 4r solves to x = -8/5. If r = 2, then 5x = 4r solves to x = 8/5.

-----------------

To find the sum of the first n terms, we use this geometric series formula

Sn = a*(1 - r^n)/(1 - r)

We have

  • a = 4 = first term
  • r = 2, since we want all the terms to be positive
  • n = 10 = number of terms to sum up

So,

Sn = a*(1 - r^n)/(1 - r)

S10 = 4*(1 - 2^10)/(1 - 2)

S10 = 4*(1 - 1024)/(-1)

S10 = 4*(-1023)/(-1)

S10 = 4092
