A population of beetles exists in which black coloration is dominant to white. If there are 64 black beetles in the population,
levacccp [35]

Answer:

It is impossible to determine the dominant allele frequency from the given information.

Explanation:

There are two equations necessary to solve a Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium question:

+ = 1

² + 2 + ² = 1

is the frequency of the dominant allele.

is the frequency of the recessive allele.

² is the frequency of individuals with the homozygous dominant genotype.

2 is the frequency of individuals with the heterozygous genotype.

² is the frequency of individuals with the homozygous recessive genotype.

Now, from the question; it says that "A population of beetles exists in which black coloration is dominant to white":

Let B = the black allele &

     b = the white allele.

If there are 64  black bettles in the population, i.e the heterozygous allele B which is :

² + 2(64) + ² = 1

; what is the dominant allele frequency i.e (²)...???

We can deduce from the above that the question only tells the number of black beetles, but does not give any information that would allow us to find the total number of beetles in the population.

Also, we do not have the homozygous recessive population or the distribution of heterozygotes and homozygous dominant beetles. Given information on the number of white beetles would allow us to calculate the recessive allele frequency, and subsequently the dominant allele frequency.

BUT, those informations were not given in the question, as such this question is invalid.

Why might some conifers have tough cones that are dependent on the heat of a fire to open up and disperse their seeds?.
kaheart [24]

Answer:

Closed-cone pines have evolved to use the heat from a forest fire as a trigger to opening their cones. The extreme heat melts the resinous sap, allowing the cone to open and exposing the seeds to the outside world.

What's the difference between flagella and 'pili' in prokaryotic cells?
Katarina [22]
Q1. The main difference between flagella and pili in a prokaryotic cell is their length. Flagella are long and thin, whip-like appendages that extend from the interior of the prokaryotic cell. There are much fewer flagella than pili on the prokaryotic cell. Pili are short and hallow, hair-like appendages from the surface of the cell. They do not extend from the interior of the cell.
Flagella are made of protein flagellin while pili are made of protein pilin.
Flagella can be found in both Gram+ and Gram- bacteria while pili can be found only in Gram- bacteria.
A function of flagella is motility. Pili can perform motility but are rather responsible for attachment and genetic exchange.

Q2. Photoautotrophic organisms contain pigments that help them absorb the light of certain wavelength so they can make their own food (because they are autotrophs) in the process of photosynthesis. There are different types of pigments and it is hard to say if they are similar to chlorophyll or not. Because they do the same function, but also they differ in chemical composition.
