La litosfera es la capa más externa de la estructura del cuerpo de la tierra. Incluye la corteza terrestre y la parte exterior del manto, el manto litosférico. En general, la litosfera se puede describir como la capa rígida del planeta, que a su vez se compone de placas individuales, que se denominan placas litosféricas.

La litosfera, a su vez, se divide en dos clases: la litosfera oceánica y la litosfera continental. La litosfera oceánica es aquella ubicada en áreas marítimas, que posee un espesor de 60 kilómetros y una composición predominantemente de basalto. En cambio, la litosfera continental es aquella que compone la corteza terrestre en las zonas de tierra firme, es decir, en tierra habitable por el humano. Esta clase de litosfera es mucho mas gruesa (por ello se trata de tierras emergidas) y de composición de granito.
