Pernicious anemia is a type of autoimmune disorder in which there is a reduction or inhibition of the intrinsic factor responsible for the synthesis of vitamin B12 in the intestine. This disease is mainly caused by stomach wall atrophy or other disorders that prevent the correct production of glycoprotein called intrinsic factor.

Despite being associated with possible gastric alterations, pernicious anemia does not always present symptoms, or presents symptoms that may be associated with other diseases, which may make its diagnosis difficult. The most recurrent symptoms may include weakness, malaise, dementia, headaches, and memory and concentration disorders. Dementia is a symptom that can be confused with another condition in older adults.
