Assignment: Write two paragraphs that describe the warning signs of a physically and sexually controlling relationship and describe the decision-making process a person should go through when deciding to leave an abusive relationship.

Response: When the red flags start to arise, it's usually too late for someone to turn away from the relationship as they were blinded by the possibility of their significant other getting 'better', even if it seems hopeless. They didn't realize the control their partner had over them, and how emotionally exhausted they became within minutes of being with them. Their life no longer belonged to them, and they lost themselves quickly. A study back in 2018 showed that regardless of gender, the person stuck in the unhealthy relationship too dearly loved their lover, and even if it resulted in a harmful ending, a lot of them would end up with Stockholm syndrome. This shows how completely and utterly their life was taken over.

Uplifting Note: Love is a powerful thing, but make sure you always put yourself first.

Answer:

It is usually very difficult for people to realize that they are in an unhealthy or abusive relationship. In these types of relationships, there are always warning signs people can look out for. Physically and/or sexually controlling relationships have early red flags like extreme jealousy, controlling behavior, unrealistic expectations, and many others. An example of a red flag is when one's partner starts to check the victim’s cell phone for call history. The abuser may also try to tell the victim how to dress, who to talk to, and where to go. This type of behavior is very concerning and might lead the victim to consider leaving the relationship.

There is a decision-making process a person should go through when deciding to leave an abusive relationship. This process has six steps. The first step when making the decision is to identify warning signs of domestic violence. After these signs have been identified then a person should consider the alternatives (stay or go). Step three is to then weigh the evidence, and decide what's going in their situation. One should carefully consider the consequences of leaving that relationship and the consequences of staying. The next step is finalizing your decision. If one decides to go, you need to tell a friend or a family member about that plan and have a plan in place. After this, a person needs to take action and fall through with their decision made in step four. The last step is to reflect. Whether a person chooses to stay or go, he or she needs to take time to reflect on the process and whether this decision that they are making is going to improve the situation or not. If he or she chooses to stay and that situation worsens, then the process can be repeated over again in order to find an ideal outcome.
