Formal, also called college education has become more and more needed in the fitness industry. Many employers now require their fitness workers to have some bachelor's degrees in a field that would be related in some way to health or fitness. This can be exercise science or even physical education. It is possible for some to substitute a degree for a certificate but you will most likely need a bachelor's and a certificate.
