secular, balanced, and modern government. They were the first reformers to promote industrialization, and they worked to increase access to education, especially for women. The Young Turks also reformed the legal system, removing much of its religious influence.
Despite their commendable achievements in domestic affairs, they were far less successful in foreign affairs. The Ottoman government chose to enter World War I on the side of the Central Powers, and the war ravaged much of the Ottoman territory and decimated its population. From 1915 to 1917, the Young Turks oversaw the massacre of an estimated 1.5 million ethnic Armenians who lived within Ottoman borders in an effort to remove outside influence on their nation. Less than a year after the war’s end, the empire had fallen, its territory broken up by the Allied powers.
