Why were supernatural elements in a play more freighting for audiences during Shakespeare time?
schepotkina [342]

During Shakeaspeare time, people actually believed in witches and demons. They were extremely superstitious, and mystical/supernatural beliefs affected their everyday lives. If someone was ill, it was not uncommon to believe that person was cursed, for example. So seeing the supernatural being represented on a stage was especially frightening, which is also why magic and the supernatural are a recurring theme in Shakespeare plays.

PLEASE, I NEED HELP!!!!!
MakcuM [25]

The answer is that the author used the word willow to portray two different meanings by using the techniques of metaphor and personification.

 1. ''An old willow with hollow branches slowly swayed his few high tendrils and sang(...) >> Here the author used the technique of personification in order to explain that the branches performed the human action of dancing.
 2. ''Love is a young green willow (...)'' >> Here the author used the technique of metaphor to compare love to a green willow (Willows are associated with spirituality and the ability to bend without snapping, a methaphor that is commonly used in Celtic culture to teach that we must adjust to the situation/feeling instead of fighting against it)

Hope this helps!
