Sedaia [141]

The impact of what we consume on our health is well known. When it comes to identifying important nutrients and the foods that contain them, nutrition science has made great strides.

This is a set of principles to assist Americans in designing a healthful diet and lifestyle by translating current science into advice on what to eat and drink and to promote health and prevent disease.

We demand quick fixes for long-term issues in our high-tech society. Wouldn't it be good if there was a pill, drink, or injection we could take to prevent the effects of overeating? You are aware that there is no such thing as a magic nutrient, food, or medication. Instead, to lower our risk of chronic disease, we must rely on wholesome diets, exercise, and lifestyle decisions—a task that many Americans find difficult.

  • Adequacy
  • Balance
  • Calorie Control
  • Nutrient Density
  • Moderation
  • Variety

Consuming foods that are rich in all the necessary elements helps prevent nutritional deficiencies including scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) and pellagra (deficiency of the B vitamin niacin).

It takes time to develop a healthy diet; it is not the way you eat every day. You can develop healthy eating habits and contribute to a healthy lifestyle by adhering to the principles of adequacy, balance, calorie (energy) control, nutrient density, moderation, and diversity.
