Answer:

x = 6

Step-by-step explanation:

It's given that triangles ABC & DEC are similar . Hence their corresponding similar sides will be proportional to each other.

=  >  \frac{ab}{de}  =  \frac{bc}{ce}  =  \frac{ac}{dc}

=  >   \frac{ab}{de}  = \frac{21}{7}  =   \frac{24 - x}{x}=  >  \frac{24 - x}{x}  =  \frac{21}{7}

=  >  \frac{24 - x}{x}  =  \frac{21}{7}

=  >  \frac{24 - x}{x}  = 3

=  > 24 - x = 3x

=  > 4x = 24

=  > x =  \frac{24}{4}  = 6

Since ∆ABC ~ ∆DEC, we may write :

AB/DE = BC/EC = AC/DC

That is, AC/DC = BC/EC ........(1)

Put down the respective lengths in Eq(1),

(24-x)/x = 21/7

24*7 - 7x = 21x

28x = 168

x = 6

There hence, the value of x is 6.

Isolate the x

You can do this by adding 16 to each side.

x - 16 = 8

+16       +16

8 + 16= 24

x = 24

Tom works for a company his normal rate of pay 15 per hour
Brrunno [24]

The amount earned by Tom is the product of the <em>rate per</em> <em>hour and the number of hours</em> worked which is $90.

  • The amount earned per hour = $15

  • The number of hours worked = 6 hours

<u>The amount earned at the normal earning rate can be calculated thus</u> :

  • <em>Normal rate per hour × number of hours</em>

Amount earned = $15 × 6 = $90

Therefore, the amount earned by Tom after working for 6 hours at the normal rate is $90.
