They are called the ventral respiratory group and the dorsal respiratory group. The ventral respiratory group is responsible for regulating inspiration and expiration. The dorsal respiratory group stimulates the inspiratory muscles, like the diaphragm (near bottom of ribs). It also helps process sensory information related to the respiratory system.
