The election was between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It was a battle between Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Thomas Jefferson win supporting the Democratic-Republicans. John Adams lost who supported the Federalists. So because of Jefferson we now have the Democratic-Republican party.
It was originally going to help fix the Articles of Confederation, but instead it ended up creating a new plan for government called the Constitution.

The separation of church and state is a phrase from Jefferson that implied that the state shall not champion one religious establishment over the other, and that the state shall guarantee freedom of worship for everybody within the states.
