What do you need to do to avoid a floating quotation
Brut [27]

D)introduce and provide context for each quotation

A floating quotation occurs when there is no clear connection from the original writing to the quotation. For example: I love my dog. "97% of dog owners love their pets." She is a great dog. This quotation has no information that ties it to the rest of the sentences. There should never be a period before opening quotation marks. To fix this, the author must introduce the source and provide context. For example: I love my dog. According to Anony Mous from <em>Made Up, </em>"97% of dog owners love their pets." Now if you're quote is more sophisticated than mine, you may need more information. For example: Before Johnny died in <em>The Outsiders</em> he gave Ponyboy one last piece of advice, he said, "Stay Gold." This tells us who is speaking and what is happening when he says the line.
