The half life for the radioactive decay of potassium- 40 to argon- 40 is 1.26 x 109 years. Suppose nuclear chemical analysis sho

ws that there is 0.771 mmol of argon-40 for every 1.000 mmol of potassium-40 in a certain sample of rock. Calculate the age of the rock. Round your answer to 2 significant digits.

Given:

Half life t1/2 for K-40 = 1.26*10⁹ years

Initial amount of K-40, A₀ = 1.000 mmol

Amount of Ar-40 formed = 0.771 mmol

To determine:

The age of the rock

Explanation:

The radioactive decay can be expressed mathematically as:

A = A₀exp(-kt)------(1)

where A₀ = initial amount

A = amount after time t

k = decay constant = 0.693/t1/2 ----(2)

Here: k = 0.693/1.26*10⁹ yr = 0.55 *10⁻⁹ yr⁻¹

Now:

A₀ of K-40= 1.000 mmol

A of K-40 = 1.000 - 0.771 = 0.229 mmol

Based on eq(1)

0.229 = 1.000 exp(-0.55*10⁻⁹t)

t = 2.68*10⁹ years

Ans: Age of rock = 2.7*10⁹ yrs

What is the freezing point in °C) of a 0.743 m
lesantik [10]

Answer:

-0.276 Degrees C

Explanation:

kf of water is 1.86

Freezing point depression= m x kf x i

i= ions present ( K+ Cl-) 1=2

1.86x2X.743= .276

Since its freezinf point depression the freezing point will lower

so

0-.276= -.276

If 1.320 moles of CH4 reacts completely with oxygen, how many grams of H2O can be formed
laiz [17]

Answer:

47.5 g of water can be formed

Explanation:

This is the reaction:

CH₄  +  2O₂  →  CO₂ + 2H₂O

Methane combustion.

In this process 1 mol of methane react with 2 moles of oxygen to produce 2 moles of water and 1 mol of carbon dioxide.

As ratio is 1:2, I will produce the double of moles of water, with the moles of methane I have.

1.320 mol  .2 = 2.64 moles

Now, we can convert the moles to mass (mol . molar mass)

2.64 mol . 18g/mol = 47.5 g

Decomposition of NI3 produces nitrogen gas and iodine. How many grams of the reactant would be required to react completely to g
VMariaS [17]

Answer:

Grams of the reactant would be required is 8.26 g

Explanation:

Decomposition of NI3 is :

2 NI3 (s) --------------------> N2 (g)............... +..................... 3 I2 (g)

2 mol..................................1 mol.........................................3 mol

2 x 394.7 g/mol..............28 g/mol....................................3 x 253.8 g/mol

789.4 g...............................28 g...........................................761.4 g

From chemical equation it is cleared that

761.4 g of iodine is obtained from = 789.4 g of NI3

Therefore,

7.97 g of iodine is obtained from = 789.4 g x 7.97 g / 761.4 of NI3

                                                       = 6291.518 / 761.4 of NI3

                                                       =  8.26 g  of NI3

Hence

Grams of the reactant would be required = 8.26 g
