Explain the difference between independent and dependent events AND how I can tell the difference in a word problem.

Answer:

The difference between the two is that in a dependent event an action will affect the ultimate outcome, but in an independent event an action won't affect the ultimate outcome. A way to tell is if the total number of the "item" at hand will be affected by the action the question is saying. In the case of the example given, that is a dependent event because the total of marbles you started with is changed due to you not replacing the one you first took. Therefore the probability is now different.

It takes 20 minutes for 5 people to paint 5 walls.
qwelly [4]
It would take 36 minutes. If you use unit rate, you would take 20min/5people and see how many minutes does it take to paint one wall. Which would be represented by 4min/1person. To find how many minutes it would take for 9 walls, you get 4min/1person to become 9 people for the denominator. Then, whatever you do to the denominator you do to the numerator. So, 4 times 9 is 36. Therefore, making the answer 36minutes/9people.

A sphere has a surface area of about803.84 square centimeters. What is the volumeof the sphere? Use 3.14 for (pie)and round to t
ZanzabumX [31]

Write out the formula for the Surface area of a sphere

\text{Surface area of a sphere=4}\pi r^2

Substitute the value for the surface area and solve for the radius.

\begin{gathered} 803.84=4\pi r^2 \\ \pi=3.14 \\ \frac{803.84}{4\pi}=\frac{4\pi\times r^2}{4\pi} \end{gathered}\begin{gathered} r^2=\frac{803.84}{4\times3.14}=64 \\ r=\sqrt[]{64} \\ r=8\operatorname{cm} \end{gathered}

Formula for the volume of a sphere

\begin{gathered} \text{Volume of a sphere=}\frac{\text{4}}{3}\pi r^3 \\ \text{where r=8, }\pi=3.14 \\ \text{Volume}=\frac{4}{3}\times3.14\times8^3 \\ V=\frac{6430.72}{3}=2143.5733\approx2144cm^3(\text{nearest whole number)} \end{gathered}

Hence, the volume of the sphere is 2144cm³(to the nearest whole number).

Jane cuts a piece of twine into three pieces.The second pieces is 7 times as long as the
Dovator [93]
Twine into three pieces, lets call them x, y and z

The second piece is 7 times as long as the first piece
7x = y
The third piece is 5 feet longer than the first piece
x + 5 = z
The total length of twine is 320 feet
x + y + z = 320

This is a simultaneous equation.
My goal is to make the final equation in terms of x <span>i.e. 5.5x = 320
</span>I choose the final equation because it is the only equation which has a value in it.

We will substitute the first and second equation into the third equation.
7x = y , x + 5 = z
x + y + z = 320
x + (7x) + (x+5) = 320
9x + 5 = 320
9x = 315
x = 35
Now that we know x, we can substitute it into the first and second equation to find x and y
7x = y              =>        7(35) = y      =>   245 = y
x + 5 = z          =>        (35) + 5 = z  =>   40 = z

In summary
>The first piece, x, is 35 feet long
>The second piece, y, is 245 feet long
>The third piece, z, is 40 feet log

Solve for x <br> answer must be simplified <br> -30&lt; x/-4
Brums [2.3K]

Answer:

x < 120

Step-by-step explanation:

Step 1: Multiply both sides by -4.

  • -30 * -4 < \frac{x}{-4} * -4
  • 120 > x
  • x < 120

Therefore, x < 120.
