The colonial attitudes changed about government because they did not want a monarchy and did not want someone in total control. This is where republicanism came into play and that the people would decide who was in power. The people are the ones who have the power.
No I would not trust what they say. The debates are long and in order to strengthen their claims they are going to come up with at least a couple lies along the way.
