Answer:

10.30

Step-by-step explanation:

Pythagorean Theorem is a^{2} + b^{2} = c^{2}.  The short leg(a) is 5 units long and the long leg(b) is 9 units long.  CD is the hypotenuse, the longest side (c).

5^{2} +9^{2} =c^{2}

25+81=c^{2}

106=c^{2}

\sqrt{106} = \sqrt{c^{2} }

10.29563014 = c

Rounded to the nearest hundredth, 10.30

To check this is correct, the hypotenuse is the longest side, and 10.30 is longer than 5 and 9.

If y varies directly as x and y = 21 when x = 5, find x when y = 42.
Lorico [155]

Answer: 10

<u>Step-by-step explanation:</u>

varies directly means: \frac{y}{x} = k

Step 1: solve for k   ⇒  \frac{21}{5} = k

Step 2: plug in the given value and k to solve for the missing value: \frac{42}{x} = \frac{21}{5}

42(5) = 21(x)

\frac{42(5)}{21} = \frac{21(x)}{21}

2(5) = x

10  = x

Robin has triple as many marbles Amy. Sam has 15 more marbles than robin. Together they all have 99 marbles. How many marbles do
tigry1 [53]
Let:     x be Amy's marbles
         3x be Robin's marbles
   15+3x be Sam's marbles
x+3x+15+3x=99
          7x+15=99
                7x=99-15 (transfer 15 to the right side of the equation, then minus)
             7x/7=84/7 (divide both sides of the equation by 7)
                  x=12
Now substitute:
                             x = 12 (Amy's)
                3x = 3*12 = 36 (Robin's)
   15+3x  = 15+3*12 =  51 (Sam's)
               12+36+51 = 99
Therefore, Amy has 12 marbles, Robin has 36 marbles and Sam has 51 marbles.
