With the Emancipation Proclamation (1863), the President publicly endorsed the abolition of slavery in southern states. Lincoln's decision to support slavery's end in the south was mostly an economic decision, hoping to strike a serious blow to their ability to support agricultural endeavors. Lincoln did not ask the Border States to give up slavery.
The battle took place on April 19, 1775. This battle along with the battle of Concord were the first battles of the American Revolutionary War.
In the early 1900's, 6 million African Americans emigrated form the rural south of the US to the northeast, mid-west and west and thus began an urban existence in many of the cities in these areas so became important politically due to their numbers and their strong support of the civil rights movement later on.
