I believe that it was important for artists to create such realistic interpretations in order for them to relate to the audience. People will react more favorably to art they can relate to somehow, art that engages their thoughts and imagination, and art that makes them feel certain emotions when presented with it.
I do believe the role of the artists has changed considerably. In the past, the artist used to create art for him/herself, and express what they were feeling at the time.
