It depends on the context; it does allow gas exchange to occur, however gas exchange occurs in the capillaries of the alveoli.

Note:

The upper airway not only provides a passage for air to be breathed in and out of the lungs, but it also heats, humidifies and filters the air and is involved in cough, swallowing and speech. Air goes to the lungs where gas exchange will occur.

If you are still confused try looking up gas exchange diagrams for more information.

TLDR: Disagree; it does allow oxygen to flow into the lungs as the upper respiratory tract is a passageway to the lungs. However, the upper respiratory tract is NOT where gas exchange occurs because the lower respiratory tract holds the lungs which allow for gas exchange.

What type of behavior modification would you recommend for an overweight, sedentary workaholic with an unhealthy diet who has ty
Umnica [9.8K]

Answer:

Firstly, as they are sedentary and also a workaholic, I would modify this behavior by telling them to control their work environment and take 10-15 mins walks for their work breaks. The reason being is that now, instead of sitting and doing work all day long with no exercise whatsoever, they will be on their feet for 10-15 minutes every hour, which is a better alternative for their sedentary and busy lifestyle.

Secondly, they are overweight but also have type 2 diabetes, I would modify this behavior by making them change their diet. Keep in mind that they will now be on their feet for 10-15 minutes every hour, which will help them lose a couple of pounds if a correct and healthy diet is also included. As they have diabetes, I have to be mindful of what they eat and how much they eat. I will tell them to replace refined carbohydrates with wholegrain foods. And also, to increase intake of vegetables and other foods high in dietary fiber. Last but not least, I would urge them to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day as this will keep them hydrated and away from sugary and unhealthy drinks.

Why does the adult vertebral column have fewer vertebrae than that of a newborn?
nirvana33 [79]

There are 5 groups in the vertebral column. In order they are called

1) Cervical

2) Thoracic

3) Lumbar

4) Sacrum

5) Coccyx

The 4th group contain 5 bones and once you are in the adult phase, roughly at about 26 years, the 5 bones fuses into one bone which shrink the number of bones the vertebra column have but but does not lose in size.
