A Silent Mutation is defined as a point mutation that does not change the amino acid. This occurs because more than one codon can code for the same amino acid. So while the protein was changed in the end there were no large-scale effects to the organism. This is why it is called a "silent" mutation because you cannot tell anything changes and there are no side effects.
