Americans and their government saw communism as a threat to freedom and capitalism. The US government used containment (preventing the spread of communism) when going into conflicts with the USSR in various countries where there were revolts related to or led by communists. I'm pretty sure it's answer D, as the other options don't make much sense.

A is wrong, the Soviets and Americans involved themselves in cold wars (ex: Korean War and the Vietnam War) to prevent full out war between the two countries, as it could lead to nuclear fallout.

B is wrong, many countries that had communist governments often suffered from weak economies and poor government policies which led to famine and poverty (ex: Stalin's 5 year plan increased industrial output of the USSR, but took away private land to create government-ran agricultural factories that exported a large majority of its products; leaving the Russian people little to eat).

C is wrong, if the Americans believed communism would never be a successful form of government, the US government would likely not have involved the country in so many conflicts in order to stop the spread of it.
