Calcitonin is released from the thyroid gland and is a polypeptide hormone consisting of 32-amino acids. It acts by reducing the calcium concentrations in the blood when they are increased to a potentially dangerous level.

Calcitonin is released under the stimulus of increased calcium concentration and hormones such as gastrin.

It inhibits the activity of osteoclasts, which are the bone reabsorbing cells. When bone is broken down, the calcium contained in the bone is released into the bloodstream. Therefore, the inhibition of the osteoclasts by calcitonin directly reduces the amount of calcium released into the blood. Its also acts by inhibiting the reabsorption of calcium from the kidney, resulting in increased calcium excretion in the urine. Calcitonin counters the effects of parathyroid hormone.

Both of these hormones work together maintaing a state of homeostasis.
