A student performed an experiment to determine the effect of acid rain on plant growth. The student divided 80 seeds of a fast-g

rowing plant species into four groups of 20 seeds each. The four groups of seeds were then planted in soil. After all of the seeds germinated in the same growing conditions, they were watered once a day with simulated rainwater that had different levels of acidity. The acidity of the four different watering solutions was as follows:
neutral water, 0.1%, 1.0%, and 10%. The average height of the plants in each group was measured over a two-week period.

Complete the following items using the information above

a. Identify the independent variable in the experiment.
b. Describe the control in the experiment.
c. Based on the described experiment, state a valid hypothesis for the experiment.
d. The experiment was repeated and each soil had the addition of crushed limestone. Describe how the modification of the study would affect the results.

Answer:

a) The independent variable is the variable which is being taken as the source of an observation. It is the variable which is unaffected (changed) by other factors in the experiment

Here the independent variable is the acidity (concentrations) of the watering solutions

b, The control in the experiment is the plant group which are not administered the treatment of the experiment, such that they are kept the same through out to aid in validation of the correlation between the dependent and the independent variables

The control in the experiment are the group of 20 plants that received neutral water

c. A valid hypothesis is that there is no difference in the level of growth of a plant grown in acid rain and one grown with natural water

d. Limestone is composed of calcium carbonate, which is an alkaline that dissolves in water to form a basic solution that neutralizes the effect of the added acid such that it will invalidate the correlation of the level of plant growth with exposure to acid rain

LORAN is a long range hyperbolic navigation system. Suppose two LORAN transmitters are located at the coordinates (−60,0) and (6
USPshnik [31]

LORAN follows an hyperbolic path.

The equation of the hyperbola is: \mathbf{\frac{x^2}{2500} + \frac{y^2}{1100} = 1}

The coordinates are given as:

\mathbf{(x,y) = (-60,0)\ (60,0)}

The center of the hyperbola  is

\mathbf{(h,k) = (0,0)}

The distance from the center to the focal points is given as:

\mathbf{c = 60}

Square both sides

\mathbf{c^2 = 3600}

The distance from the receiver to the transmitters  is given as:

\mathbf{2a = 100}

Divide both sides by 2

\mathbf{a = 50}

Square both sides

\mathbf{a^2 = 2500}

We have:

\mathbf{b^2 = c^2 - a^2}

This gives

\mathbf{b^2 = 3600 - 2500}

\mathbf{b^2 = 1100}

The equation of an hyperbola is:

\mathbf{\frac{(x - h)^2}{a^2} + \frac{(y - k)^2}{b^2} = 1}

So, we have:

\mathbf{\frac{(x - 0)^2}{2500} + \frac{(y - 0)^2}{1100} = 1}

\mathbf{\frac{x^2}{2500} + \frac{y^2}{1100} = 1}

Hence, the equation of the hyperbola is: \mathbf{\frac{x^2}{2500} + \frac{y^2}{1100} = 1}

Answer:

305.12 square inches

Step-by-step explanation:

The picture of the question in the attached figure

we know that

The area of the window is equal to the area of a rectangle, plus the area of two quarter circles plus the area of the smaller square between the two upper corners

so

Find the area of rectangle

A=(12)(26-4)=264\ in^2

Find the area of the two quarter circle

A=2[\frac{1}{4}(3.14)(4^2)]

A=25.12\ in^2

Find the area of the smaller square between the two upper corners

A=(12-8)(4)=4^2=16\ in^2

The total area is equal to

A=264+25.12+16=305.12\ in^2

Answer:

  11/60

Step-by-step explanation:

It is convenient to use the relationship between sine, cosine, and tangent.

tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x) = (11/61)/(60/61)

tan(x) = 11/60
