According to the image, the myelin sheath in a person with multiple sclerosis wears away. This damage hampers the ability of the nerve cells to transmit impulses as fast as they can. This inability results in symptoms such as visual disturbances. It also causes chronic, dull pain. These symptoms wouldn’t exist if the myelin sheath were intact. Nerve cells and axons are the way we transmit motor and sensory signals. The cells and axons are coated with myelin a.k.a.(myelin sheath) Myelin allows smooth transition of signals to and from motor and sensory pathways. In multiple sclerosis the myelin sheath is irreversibly damaged. The damage to the myelin interrupts the normally smooth transmission of signals. The damage leads to pins and needles sensations(paresthesias), muscle weakness secondary to poor motor signal transmission, vision is no different as the sensory signal is impeded from transmission secondary to lack of myelin sheath
