More than half of these grasslands are in northern China, the area covered in this study. These northern grazinglands include parts of the three provinces of the Northeast—Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning—the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Gansu and Qinghai provinces, and the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
