Louisiana's abundant natural resources have supported the development of its economy. The rich soil of Louisiana has produced generous harvests since the Native Americans first planted corn. Agriculture today has shifted from the small farms and plantations of the past to huge agribusiness systems. Louisiana's major mined products are petroleum and natural gas and are responsible for over 90% of the state's mining income. Other important mined products are sulfer and salt. Louisiana also produces coal and sand and gravel.
