France played a role in Americans moving West by agreeing to the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Louisiana Purchase was a deal made by the United States and France, and was the exchange of U.S. territory for around $15 million. Napoleon, who was the leader of France at this time, declined the first offer for the Louisiana Purchase, but as conflicts in Europe arose, he decided he needed the money and finally agreed.
