Before humans settled into civilizations where large groups were living in the same city or town, people are considered to have

been hunters and gatherers. Those hunters and gatherers moved around in small groups.
With settlement in cities and towns, because there were a lot more humans living together in one place, "social classes" developed with some people having more privileges than other people. For example, here is a pyramid (an appropriate shape!) showing the "social classes" of ancient Egypt:
