What were the benefits and drawbacks of using indentured servants for labor in virginia?
mamaluj [8]

The biggest benefit of using an indentured or contract bound servant was that they got free passage to the New World. It was the indentured servants who did most of the dirty and dangerous work in the New World since they were non essential and of little significance.

The drawback of using indentured or contract bound servants for labor was that they were only able to work for someone for a certain number of years as mentioned in their contracts. Then they had to be set free unlike the slaves who did not needed to be set free after a certain time period.

Explain Senator Stephen Douglas’ attempts at securing a bid for the Presidency
leva [86]

Stephen Douglass was a Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate in 1858. Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln to obtain his Senate seat. He was a supporter of the idea of popular sovereignty, the belief that the settlers in newly admitted territories should determine whether the area would be slave or free. Douglass received the Democratic nomination for president in 1860. Douglass support of popular sovereignty led to the splintering of the Democratic Party into Northern and Southern factions. Northerners opposed secession while Southerners supported it. The splintering of the party led to their defeat and the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln in 1860.
