It was an event popular with the counter-culture hippie society and also featured well known protest singers like Joan Baez. It was planned for 50,000 people but actually something like 500,000 came! A lot of sex, drugs and rock and roll music happened there. The organizers had to allow it to be free since 50,000 people entered the area before the gates were up but they recouped some losses from it with the film on it.
