Answer: By "waves can be refracted" they mean that refraction can occur with waves. To better explain, refraction is the "change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another or from a gradual change in the medium."  You probably know this best when you put a pencil inside a glass of water where the pencil bends a bit. The same can happen with sound or water waves as well!

On a hot summer day a young girl swings on a rope above the local swimming hole. when she lets go of the rope her initial veloci
weqwewe [10]
Refer to the diagram shown below.
 h =  height of the girl above water when she lets go of the rope.

The launch velocity is 22.5 m/s at 35° to the horizontal. Therefore the vertical component of the velocity is
v = 22.5 sin(35°) = 12.9055 m/s.

The time of flight is t = 1.10 s before the girl hits the surface of the water at a height of  -h.
Therefore
-h = (12.9055 m/s)*(1.10 s) - (1/2)*(9.8 m/s²)*(1.10 s)²
-h = 8.267 m
    = 8.3 m (nearest tenth)

Answer:
When the girl let go of the rope, she was about 8.3 m  above the surface of the water.

An elevator car has a mass of 750 kg, and its three passengers have a combined mass of 135 kg. If the elevator and its passenger
joja [24]

Answer:

The change in gravitational potential energy is -1.80x10⁵ J.

Explanation:

The change in gravitational potential energy is given by:

\Delta E_{p} = E_{p_{f}} - E_{p_{i}}

\Delta E_{p} = mgh_{f} - mgh_{i}

Where:

"i" is for final and "f" for final

m: is the mass

g: is the gravity = 9.81 m/s²

h: is the height

For the car and the passengers we have:

\Delta E_{p} = m_{T}g(h_{f} - h_{i}) = (750 kg + 135 kg)9.81 m/s^{2}(0 - 20.7 m) = -1.80 \cdot 10^{5} J

The minus sign is because when the elevator car and the passengers are up they have a bigger gravitational potential energy than when they are in the ground.

Therefore, the change in gravitational potential energy is -1.80x10⁵ J.

I hope it helps you!
