The Bear Flag Revolt is the event that led to the acquisition of California.  

The state of California was acquired by the United States of America as part of the Mexican Cession. The land ceded by Mexico to the US in 1848, when the Mexican-American War ended.

By 1846, American settlers that were present in Sonoma took advantage of the Bear Flag Revolt to declare California's independence from Mexico so we can conclude that The Bear Flag Revolt is the event that led to the acquisition of California.
