Because plantation owners were mainly in the southern states. Also because there were many people that bought them from the south than anywhere else :)
They transformed peacetime industries into war industries.

Many original settlers in the Carolinas came from Barbados. It was in 1670 that Albemarle Point was established in South Carolina. Most of the settlers came from the Carribean island of Barbados.
